MARKWICK GARDENS COMMITTEE

Meeting held on Monday 18 February 2008
At 33 Brittany Road, St Leonards on Sea

Present:

Arlene, Theresa, Christine, Helen, Dulcie, Peter, Monique

Apologies:

Received from Steve and Digger

Minutes of the Last Meeting:

The minutes of the last meeting were circulated and approved.

Matters Arising:

The Committee continues to gather quotations from tree surgeons to cut down the holm oak tree next to the Cottage.

Correspondence:

There was no correspondence received but following an incident in the Gardens where a member’s dog had been attacked by the dog of an ex-member, a letter had been written on behalf of the Committee to the ex-member emphasising the distress this had caused.

Finance:

After recent payments made for public liability insurance, the gardener and the repair of the roof of the shed, the main account stands at £2789.07, the reserve account at £1280 and the Treasurer holds £65 in loose change which is required for floats at fund raising events.

Membership:

The membership secretary reported 3 new members enrolled, taking the total membership to 149. An increase in membership fees would be an item on the AGM agenda.

Maintenance:

The roof of the old shed has been mended.

The amount of dog mess in the gardens was discussed at length. It was felt that more should be done to stop irresponsible dog owners from allowing their dogs to foul and then not clearing up after them. It was unanimously agreed that this should be an item on the AGM agenda.

Railings/Fences/Gates:

It was reported that some of the catches on the gates had become rusty and one of the members had agreed to do some work on these. Padlocks had been installed where the catches were broken.

The committee had been offered some fencing and posts for the gardens and these will be delivered shortly.

Fundraising Events:

Jumble sale at St Johns Hall - 23 February 2008 10am to 2pm

The event was discussed in detail and arrangements made for the event. It has been advertised in the Friday Ad at a cost of £13.00 for two weeks. Any clothing left after the Jumble Sale would be taken down to the PDSA shop.

Barn Dance at St Johns Hall - 29 March 2008

Tickets have been printed and circulated to the Committee members. They would be on sale at the Jumble Sale. It was agreed that this could be advertised in What’s On for a cost of £10.

Annual General MeetingThe Taplin Centre- 12 April – 10am to 12 noon

The AGM had been booked at the Taplin Centre for 12 April and papers would go out shortly with the next Newsletter.

Dog Show, Markwick Gardens - 18 May 2008

The Committee heard that the show might be expanded to include an agility competition.

Summer Fair, Markwick Gardens - 22 June, 2008

To be discussed at the next meeting.

Summer Musical Event – Sunday 3 August 2008 (provisional)

It is intended to put on another event with the same format as last year during August and the 3 August was suggested as a possible date. This would be confirmed as soon as possible and advertised to members.

Any Other Business:

The new flats on the corner of Brittany Road and Dane Road

Several Committee members expressed concern that the car parking spaces around the new flats did not appear to be sufficient for all the flats to have one car parking space, which had appeared to be the case from the plans originally submitted by the developers. It was agreed that the Committee would try to confirm the exact situation.

The Meeting ended at 9.40pm. The next meeting will take place on Monday 17 March 2008, at 8.00pm and will be held at 33 Brittany Road.
